Signs Your Parent is Ready to Move into a Senior Living Community
You can look and look, but many times there are not clear signs on when it’s time to move a parent or loved one into a senior living community. Perhaps they’re struggling once and a while with everyday tasks, they’re losing things or seem very lonely at home. Those subtle signs are easy to overlook and blame on simply getting older. The reality is, those are indicators of your loved one needing some extra support. Keep an eye out for these other behaviors as well.
They’re getting rid of things.
If you notice your parent cleaning out closets or rummaging through old boxes and making “keep” and “throw away” piles, those are signs of downsizing. As you notice these types of behaviors, find a time to casually ask your parent what prompted them to take those initiatives.
They’re doing their research.
If you’ve overheard your parent talking with a friend about retirement living options, noticed they’ve been looking up senior living communities online or they’ve kept a senior living mailer handy, those are all good indicators they’re interested in learning more about what’s available in retirement living. If there’s an opportunity to bring up the subject, try mentioning what you’ve noticed and ask if there is anything you can do to help with their research.
They’re bringing it up.
Your parent casually asks if you have heard anything about this community, or mention that they have a friend that really likes that community. Maybe you’re in the car and they ask you to take a detour to drive past one of them. While they’re not saying it directly, you should pay attention to these little hints. Your parent could be incorporating it in conversation to get your reaction or ask your opinion. Be supportive of their curiosity and suggest taking a tour.
At 10 Wilmington Place, we strive to make the transition into our senior living community as seamless as possible. If you or your parent is interested in touring our community, schedule a visit today!
