Depression & Aging: 4 Things that Can Help Combat Sadness
Depression is a major issue for seniors. According to WebMD.com, "Late-life depression affects about 6 million Americans ages 65 and older." Fortunately, geriatric depression is largely avoidable. When you're living in a positive, supportive environment, many triggers of depression can be eliminated.
At 10 Wilmington Place, we're proud to say that we take care of our residents like they're part of our own families. We recognize that life's transitions can be a bit scary, which is why we've created a senior living community that's specifically intended to enhance our residents' lives so they can enjoy their Golden Years.
Here are a few of elements we've built into our community to ensure our residents' happiness:
1. Social Activities
Connecting with people is incredibly important for a person's health and well-being, both mentally and physically. In fact, a number of studies – including this one, summarized on PsychCentral.com–“[have been] able to find clear evidence that joining groups, and coming to identify with them, can alleviate depression.”
As such, our 10 Wilmington Place team has created an in-depth collection of activities to ensure our residents feel connected with their neighbors. We offer a variety of activities for our independent living residents, as well as a full calendar of offerings for our assisted living residents.
It's our goal to offer a little something for everyone, so you'll find fitness activities, games, movies and much more.
2. Community Events
Community events are great ways to connect with others and enhance your social circle.
Mealtime, for example, is a common community event in which everyone shares at least one interest–food!
Besides things you do in your everyday life, community events can provide you with the opportunity to step outside your comfort zone and experience something new or meet people you wouldn't have met otherwise.
The following are a few of the special community events we host at 10 Wilmington Place:
- 60 monthly movie showings in our two on-site cinemas
- Men's Club
- Wii bowling tournaments
- Arts & Crafts classes
3. Fostering Family Relationships
Support from family and friends is imperative. We understand that this starts well before move-in day. We offer our helpful guide all of those who are helping their loved ones find the right senior living community. It all starts with a single conversation, and we welcome you to browse our brochures and read our Tips on Talking to Your Parents About Senior Living to gain insight about things you can do to facilitate the process so your loved one feels like he or she is involved.
Your family's well-being is important to us. If you have questions, please feel free to reach out to us. Our experienced staff will do our best to provide you with answers.
4. Beautiful Grounds
Some senior living communities can make you feel like you're trapped in a sterile medical setting, which can lead to feelings of isolation and trigger depression.
10 Wilmington Place is far from your average senior community. Our beautiful grounds are inviting, warm and welcoming. With 34 acres of stunning scenery, you could find yourself taking adventures on a regular basis. Outside, you'll find an expansive park-like green space that's perfect for morning strolls. The gazebo by the pond is a perfect place to relax and contemplate. We also have a terrace with a great view of the city.
Environment is everything when it comes to staving off depression. We're proud to say our grounds are top notch.
Depressions isn't something anyone should go through alone. At 10 Wilmington Place, we understand that life's transitions can be frightening, but you can rest assured that we've created a community that will welcome and support you. We'd love to hear from you! Please feel free to contact us for more information or to schedule a visit so you can see our beautiful community for yourself.
