Dr. John Remick’s life has been shaped by a deep love of learning and an enduring connection to the city of Dayton, two constants that have guided his path from student to educator to lifelong community member.

Now a resident at 10 Wilmington Place, he remains deeply rooted in the Dayton community while embracing growth and connection in this next chapter of life.

Growing Up in the Dayton Area

Dr. John Remick’s story begins in Bellbrook, where he grew up and attended Bellbrook schools before graduating from what is now Miami Valley School. From an early age, he was surrounded by the kind of local roots and family presence that would go on to define his life.

“Dayton has always been home,” he shared with a smile. “It’s not just where I lived, it’s where my family’s story began.”

As a seventh-generation Daytonian, with family first settling in the area in 1804, his connection to the region runs unusually deep, spanning more than two centuries.

An Education Built Across Institutions

Dr. Remick’s academic journey reflects both curiosity and practicality. He attended Northwestern University and The Ohio State University, later earning his PhD from Miami University. At one point, he also attended the University of Dayton to obtain his teaching certification.

Each step, he says, ultimately led him toward his true calling.

“I didn’t always know exactly where I was headed,” he said, “but I knew I wanted to spend my life teaching.”

A Lifelong Career in Teaching

Much of Dr. Remick’s professional life was spent in Dayton Public Schools, where he taught at both the middle and high school levels. His subjects ranged widely, including Latin, German, and mathematics, reflecting both his academic versatility and his love of language and logic.

While teaching in Dayton Public Schools, he also took on a math supervisor role. For seven of those years, he taught both German and math in the evenings at Sinclair Community College. It was a role he took, in part, because he simply missed being in the classroom. Teaching in the evenings helped keep him connected to the work he loved most.

“One of the most rewarding parts of teaching is watching something finally click for a student,” he reflected. “You never forget those moments.”

His years in education left a lasting imprint on generations of students across the city.

A Deep Connection to Dayton and the Arts

Beyond the classroom, Dr. Remick’s life has been intertwined with Dayton’s cultural fabric. His former home included several pieces he has since donated to the Dayton Art Institute, a reflection of both personal taste and civic pride.

He also spent part of his life living in the Oregon District, one of Dayton’s most historic neighborhoods, further anchoring his connection to the city’s evolving identity.

Dayton, for him, has always been more than a backdrop. It’s been a living, changing community he has remained deeply invested in.

A Life Shaped by Curiosity, In and Out of the Classroom

Outside of his professional life, Dr. Remick's curiosity has taken him far and wide. An avid traveler, he has visited 29 countries, including 18 trips to Europe and journeys to Russia and Thailand, among others. At home, he finds equal pleasure in listening to classical music, collecting antiques, and reading. These pursuits reflect the same love of history, culture, and ideas that defined his teaching career.

Coming Home to 10 Wilmington Place

Dr. Remick moved to 10 Wilmington Place in the spring, a location that already held personal meaning as his mother had previously lived there for several years. Situated in the heart of Dayton, the community felt familiar from the start.

“Coming here felt like a continuation of something, not a change,” he said. “There’s a sense of connection.”

For him, choosing senior living in a city so closely tied to his family history felt natural, especially in a family-owned community that values continuity, relationships, and belonging.

A Life Rooted in Legacy and Learning

Looking back, Dr. Remick sees a life shaped by education, family, and place, all deeply intertwined.

“I’ve been fortunate to spend my life doing work I cared about, in a city I’ve always loved,” he said. “That’s something I don’t take for granted.”
