Resident Spotlight: Carin Tannehill

Carin Tannehill’s story is defined by compassion, resilience, and a lifelong commitment to caring for others. From her decades in critical care nursing to her active life today at 10 Wilmington Place, Carin brings a deep sense of purpose and positivity to every chapter of her life. “I love being retired,” she shares. “I never look back.”

From Florida Roots to a Calling in Healthcare

Born and raised in Pensacola, Florida, Carin didn’t initially set out to become a nurse. But when a local nursing program opened nearby, she decided to give it a try and it quickly became her calling. “I just threw my name in the hat,” she says. “I didn’t even think I’d get in, but I did, and I really liked it.” She went on to earn her associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees in nursing, building a career that would span over four decades.

A Career in Critical Care and Heart Transplant Medicine

Carin moved to New Orleans in 1982, where she began her work in ICU nursing. Drawn to the intensity and challenge of critical care, she spent 20 years at the bedside before becoming a nurse practitioner. As an NP, she specialized in heart transplant and advanced heart failure care, working within the same hospital system for another 25 years. “We managed patients from the time they were referred to us all the way through transplant and beyond,” she explains. Her work included caring for patients with complex cardiac conditions, mechanical circulatory support devices, and post-transplant recovery. It is an incredibly specialized and meaningful field, and one in which Carin thrived.

A Move Rooted in Family

After retiring, Carin made the decision to move to Ohio in 2025 to be closer to her daughter, son-in-law, and three grandchildren who reside in Kettering. “I had never lived in Ohio,” she says. “Never thought I would be, but here I am!” The move brought her closer to family while opening the door to a new community and lifestyle.

Why 10 Wilmington Place Felt Like Home

Carin explored a few senior living options, but the decision became clear the moment she arrived at 10 Wilmington Place. “When we pulled up, all three of us just knew,” she says. “This was going to be the place.” The beautiful grounds, welcoming atmosphere, and long-tenured staff stood out right away. More than anything, it didn’t feel like a traditional retirement community. “In ways, it reminds me of New Orleans," she shares.

Finding Connection and Community

Since moving in, Carin has embraced all that community life has to offer. She serves on the wellness committee, helping support residents returning from the hospital, and stays active through resident meetings, trivia, happy hours, exercise classes, and gardening. “I’ve developed a lot of really good friendships here,” she says. She especially enjoys walking the grounds, spending time on the front porch, and getting involved with the gardening committee and the raised community garden beds. One of her favorite moments? Celebrating Mardi Gras at 10 Wilmington Place. “That made me not miss home as much,” she says with a smile.

Independence with Built-In Support

For Carin, one of the biggest benefits of living at 10 Wilmington Place is the balance it offers. “It’s nice not to have to worry about fixing meals. There’s housekeeping, transportation…it’s a lot.” She also appreciates the thoughtful systems in place that prioritize resident well-being, from daily check-ins to emergency preparedness. “I feel really supported here,” she says.

Advice for Others Considering Senior Living

Carin encourages others to look for a community that offers both independence and engagement. "You want a place that has a mix of activities and opportunities to stay involved,” she says. “And somewhere you feel safe.” She also emphasizes the importance of getting outside, staying social, and building connections. “That’s how you meet people. That’s how you stay happy.”

Words to Live By

Carin’s outlook on life is simple and powerful. “Grow old with grace and dignity,” she says. “You can choose happiness every day.”
