Resident spotlight: John and Emmy Lou Miller

Some couples have a chemistry that is impossible to miss, and that is certainly the case for John and Emmy Lou Miller. Married for 67 years, their love story is filled with adventure, humor, and a shared passion for learning, working hard, and experiencing the world together.

Originally from different parts of the country, John grew up in Cleveland, while Emmy was raised in New Jersey. Her path to Ohio was guided by family influence.

“My father was insistent that I go to a school in Ohio,” she mused. “I don’t know why because he went to Columbia, but he ruled the roost.”

Her father’s nudge turned out to be fate: it took her to the College of Wooster and later to what is now Case Western Reserve, where she met John.

A lifetime of learning and leadership

Emmy initially dreamed of pursuing music but realized it wasn’t the right fit.

“I wanted music, but it was too intense for me and I really didn’t have any talent,” she recalled. “I played the piano and the organ, sang a little bit, but had no real talent. So I was taking a course in English and I got an A on the paper. I said, ‘That’s my major.’”

Her decision led to a long and rewarding career as an English and reading teacher, working with students from grades 7 through 12 for over 40 years. She eventually moved into a supervisory role, overseeing over 200 teachers in the Cleveland Public School system.

Meanwhile, John built a career as a CPA, operating his own firm for decades. Their two careers eventually merged when Emmy retired from teaching and joined John’s business.

“She told me she was leaving teaching to work with me,” John recalled. “And I said, ‘Alright, but you better be ready for long hours.’ Twelve hours is half a day!”

Emmy laughed and replied, “And I did it for 20 years.”

A world of adventure

The Millers spent much of their life traveling, experiencing cultures across Europe, Asia, Africa, and beyond.

“Every place has its own unique features,” John said. “It’s hard to say which we enjoyed the most.”

One of their more memorable trips was a visit to Africa, where they stayed in a tent surrounded by wildlife.

“They stole a woman’s compact from the tent next to ours,” Emmy recalled, shaking her head at the memory of the mischievous monkeys.

Their travels even took them on a hot air balloon ride over the Serengeti, a moment of breathtaking beauty and excitement that they’ll never forget.

A new home in Dayton

Since they had spent their lives in Cleveland, the Millers never imagined they would move to Dayton. But as they got older, their daughter, who lives in Fairborn, began researching senior living communities for them.

“She saved the best for last,” John said. “She told us, ‘This is where you need to be.’ And she was right.”

The decision to move to 10 Wilmington Place came after touring several options.

“One place felt like a luxury hotel, another was too dark,” John explained. “Here, the windows are big, the people are friendly, and it just felt right.”

Since moving in six years ago, they have found a fulfilling and active community.

“We’ve been dining together for six years,” John said of their dinner group. “We talk about our lives, share ideas, and stay engaged. It’s a good way to live.”

From attending Bible study to taking part in exercise classes and events, they stay as busy as ever.

“If you like people, you’ll love it here,” John said simply.

For the Millers, life is about connection, curiosity, and community. At 10 Wilmington Place, they have found a place that allows them to continue building friendships and making the most of every day.
