At 10 Wilmington Place, we pride ourselves on the industry-leading care we provide to our Memory Care patients who are suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.
Our Josephine Memory Care Center is named in honor of the mother of our owner and founder
Barry Humphries. Josephine Humphries bravely faced Alzheimer’s for 14 years, and inspired the deep personal connection that drives our mission to provide the best Memory Care in the Dayton area.
That family connection, along with our own status as a family-owned community, means we want to take care of our residents as if they were truly a part of our own family. But it also means that we understand how important it is to take care of our patients’ families.
That’s why we’re proud to host a twice monthly support group for families, loved ones and caregivers of those living with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Presented by the Miami Valley Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, this group meets at 5 p.m. on the first and third Thursday of each month at 10 Wilmington Place. The group is designed to:
Our Memory Care Director, Chris Shelley, has more than 32 years of healthcare experience, and is passionate about providing the very best care in the senior living industry.
In his experience, Chris has learned that one of the most important — but often overlooked — elements of great Memory Care is taking care of a resident’s loved ones as well. Chris had been involved with the Alzheimer’s Association for years, and realized that there was no support group available to the Dayton area.
He took it upon himself to go through the training and testing process to become certified in running a support group, and implemented the program at 10 Wilmington Place to make it available to the whole community, not just those associated with our residents.
The meetings have become an important resource for a variety of people. Not only do those with loved ones near the end of their lives see value in the sessions, but many come to share and learn while their loved ones are still in either Assisted or even Independent Living.
“Just because they're still able to live outside of Memory Care doesn’t mean that the diagnosis is less devastating for their family, or that support is any less needed,” he said.
One important impact from these sessions has been helping families get loved ones the care they need sooner than they might have.
Because of the nature of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, far too many people wait too long to help their loved ones find a community that can support them. That can lead to embarrassing, frustrating and even dangerous incidents at home.
But when families can learn more about these diseases, hear from others who have experienced what they’re going through, and understand the importance of care, we can remove the stigma and alleviate the guilt associated with Memory Care.
Together, we can help our seniors suffering from these conditions to receive better care, and help their loved ones understand that it’s OK to seek the proper treatment for them when the time comes.
If you have questions about the support group, Memory Care or the resources that are available to families, contact Chris Shelley at (937) 813-1569.
