Memory Care Activities to Enhance Quality of Life

At 10 Wilmington Place, we love to keep our residents engaged and active.

This is especially important for our residents in Memory Care, taking initiative with their own activities, providing daily mobility and getting reminders throughout the day to actively engage and participate in activities, programming and mealtime. That’s why we host a variety of activities that offer residents many options throughout each day and evening. Our Memory Care Director, Chris Shelley, has specialized Dementia training that guides the activities and programming in our Memory Care community.

Here are just a few of the regular activities we host at 10 Wilmington Place that are beneficial for our Memory Care residents:

Bingo

Independent Living, Assisted Living or Memory Care — it doesn’t matter! Everyone loves bingo, and it can be a great reason for some of our residents to socialize and participate in an activity that keeps them alert and thinking. If Jenga or board games are more your speed, we have plenty of those, too!

Greet the Day

For residents in Memory Care, it can be very helpful to maintain a consistent schedule. As an example, residents are assisted with ADLs (activities of daily living) like dressing and hygiene. Our dedicated Memory Care team looks forward to helping residents get ready for the day each morning.

Fun with Art

Art can be very beneficial for Memory Care residents — even in the form of some casual drawing. Our Activities team hosts a weekly art session that encourages creativity, brain stimulation and using fine motor skills.

Armchair Travels

For many of our residents, traveling far from 10 Wilmington Place is a challenge, so we bring travel to them! Using a mixture of technology and research, we utilize our new iN2L learning technology. This enables residents and family members to experience a new destination through photos, information, music and more. It could be an exotic location or a resident's favorite hometown or favorite vacation spot!

Music and Dance

Research shows that music can be a great tool in treating Alzheimer’s Disease or another form of Dementia, and it helps our residents who love music! A music therapist comes to 10 Wilmington Place twice a month, and we have a variety of music-oriented activities that get our residents singing and dancing, from singalongs and drum circles to hymns and a rhythm band.

Mind Games

There’s always a game happening somewhere at 10 Wilmington Place, but it’s not just cards and Wii Bowling. Our residents love to play games that have the added benefit of keeping their minds in shape, like Name 5, Hangman or The Alphabet Game, where residents think of something in a certain category that starts with each letter.

Exercise Classes

Staying physically active is one of the best ways to combat Alzheimer’s Disease or another form of Dementia. To keep our residents moving, we host exercise classes like Sittercise with Ron (a therapist from Queen City Skilled Care), Noodle Ball, Beach Ball Toss or Movin’ to the Music.

Food and Cooking

Many residents in Assisted Living and Memory Care were fabulous cooks and bakers! Our Memory Care programming is designed to make food fun again. Socials and gatherings are a fun way to introduce foods that aren't on the daily menu. Our Memory Care Director does a great job of integrating fun ways to mix things up with activities and special events that offer fun treats for special occasions.

In addition to these regular activities, we always add new, rotating events to our calendar. We love hosting special parties for holidays — many of which add elements from above, like music, games and food — and we expose residents to new things as often as possible.
